20th Street Residence
Santa Monica, CA
The 20th Street Residence exists in a dense urban environment at the rear of an R2 lot and backs up to a local Junior College. This home for a growing family with two teens was designed for both privacy (individual and community) and collective gathering.
The open plan loft style ground level includes floor to ceiling roll up glass garage doors with acid etched concrete floors bordered by a sculptural staircase and spaces defined by the owner’s eclectic furnishings and artwork. The building mass was pushed to the North portion of the narrow site maximizing the yard space to the South and creating an integrated indoor/outdoor living space protected by the long connecting balcony of the bedrooms.
The exterior massing is a volumetric composition of plaster forms with vaulted ceilings and a linear balcony and canopy with dark wood slat siding used to unify the elements into a coherent whole.
