Point Loma Residence
San Diego, CA

The Point Loma Residence consists of the renovation of an existing 1,300 SF single story Spanish home and a 1,000 SF second floor addition. The new addition is conceived as a "still life" respectfully placed above the existing house. It is derivative of the existing home's Spanish Colonial typology and massing without copying its exact expression. The addition is deliberately set back from the original home's roof edge to allow the existing form to remain complete in and of itself further reinforcing the dialog between old and new.

Simple shapes with punched openings were utilized in homage to the early 20th century Mediterranean modernist, Irving Gill, and color was seen as an integral aspect of the home whose second floor view encompasses the downtown San Diego skyline as well as the hills of Mexico in the distance.
